In part since I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum from a first-hand perspective (Brown University), I believe that teaching should be a fusion of studying art and different subjects. That's not a shock coming from an ethnomusicologist who has a MA from 1967 and an Ph.D. at UCLA. The ethnomusicology course I began here in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music at a College of Letters and Science. It's fun to pursue multiple interests. Also, I like looking at the whole picture. I love teaching both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) who I've written three textbooks: Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. There are times when I'm the sole professor and other periods in which I do administrative work (such as Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising, 1992-1998, and Director of Deans in the College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
